YOUNG ADULT

The beautiful Ms. Theron won me over when she played a frumpy serial killer.  So when I read rave reviews of her performance in Young Adult I knew I would see it.
The story was of a sad woman twenty years out of HS who had begun to believe that those were her glory days.  Although the movie had some fine performances by actors in addition to the one of Charlize,  it was certainly not a movie to come out in December.  It will be overlooked.

Alas, it is almost Academy Award time so I suppose the release date coincided with an effort to pick up some nods.  It may, but December movies are supposed to wow, inspire and, leave you feeling warm and fuzzy.  Young Adult just made me sad.

SHERLOCK HOLMES

Again, not my kind of movie but, I had seen the first one on TV and enjoyed it so, I was willing to spend the money to see the second one in the theatre.

The buddy chemistry of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law (two of my favorite actors) was every bit as good as Newman and Redford as Cassidy and Sundance but, that was about as good as the movie got for me.  I could not follow the plot, fidgeted and grew bored.

Despite what I think the move is a hit.  I'll catch the third one on TV.

NEW YEAR'S EVE

This movie has gotten less than stellar reviews.  However, I don't think Garry Marshall set out to make an epic here.  Like its predecessor "Valentines Day" it was chocked full of actors we all know and love.  The plot was simple with a surprise at the end.

Sure it was an easy paycheck for those involved but, I left the theatre feeling better than I did when I went in.  Isn't that what movies are supposed to do?
